What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology involves materials so small (1 to 100 nanometers in size) that they exhibit unique properties. To put the nanoscale size range nanoscale in perspective, a hair is about 50,000 nanometers thick. The goal of nanotechnology research is to understand the unique properties of nanosized particles and use that knowledge to create new, high-performance materials, devices, and processes.

What is the significance of nanotechnology?

According to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, "Nanoscience and nanoengineering are leading to unprecedented understanding of the fundamental building blocks of all physical things. These developments are likely to change the way almost everything -- from vaccines to computers to automobile tires to objects not yet imagined -- is designed and made."
